Getting Started with ChatGPT Projects
To start, head over to ChatGPT.com (link in the description). Make sure you’re logged in and can see the “Projects” section in the left sidebar.
Note: If you don’t see “Projects,” you’re likely on the free plan, where this feature isn’t yet available. You’ll need to upgrade to access it.
- Click the “New Project” button.
- Give your project a name (e.g., “Riddles”).
- Click “Create Project.”
Project Organization
Projects aren’t just folders. Yes, projects allows you to organize your chats. For example, you can take your past chats and drag them in the project. I can also add them by clicking on the three dots next to the chat’s name and then clicking add to project.And if you want to add a new chats, you just make sure that this project is selected and then add a prompt to the prompt box. We can submit the prompt and becomes its own chat.
The Real Power: Custom Instructions
The real magic lies in the “Add Instructions” feature. Clicking on this button allows you to input instructions in the text box, which the AI will respect and consider in all of its responses.
- For this project, ChatGPT will create bullet points, which is suitable for a sixth grade reading. It should also start each response with a fun emoji.
- Click “Save” to commit.

- Create an action plan in a specific Markdown format (headings, bullet points, bracketed results).

Projects vs. Custom GPTs: What’s the Difference?
- Simplicity: Projects are easier and quicker to create.
- Power: Custom GPTs offer more power through actions and integrations.
- Model Choice: Projects allow you to select different models (including legacy ones), while custom GPTs are limited to GPT-4.
- Sharing: You can’t share Projects. Use custom GPTs if you need to share your instructions with a team.
Important Note: Chats within Projects don’t share context. Each chat is independent.
